ADR/Mediation

The ADR/Mediation Committee of the South Palm Beach County Bar conducts educational luncheons every other month. The luncheon meetings not only allow mediators, arbitrators and attorneys to meet and network, but provide substantive seminars on all aspects of ADR, including family mediation, civil circuit mediation and arbitration. Participants receive continuing educational credit for mediators and attorneys in the various areas needed. The Committee's luncheons focus on all aspects of ADR including a traditional two hour "Role Playing Seminar" that allows all attendees to participate in mock mediations to challenge them on impasses, diversity issues and ethical dilemmas that mediators regularly address.

 

Appellate Practice

The Appellate Practice Committee is comprised of attorneys whose practice primarily focuses on state and federal appeals, in addition to complex litigation support for other attorneys. We meet several times a year for lunch in order to exchange substantive information and discuss procedures, as well as to plan seminars of interest to appellate and trial practitioners alike. All of our members are willing to speak at any South Palm Beach County Bar Association committee meeting or event where an appellate perspective would be of assistance.  For more information, please contact either Co-Chair.

 

Bankruptcy Committee

The Bankruptcy Committee of the South Palm Beach County Bar Association is comprised of bankruptcy and reorganization practitioners as well as attorneys whose practice areas overlap with the bankruptcy arena. We meet several times per year to discuss recent and ongoing developments in the area of bankruptcy law.

 

Civil Practice

The Civil Practice Committee  of the South Palm Beach County Bar Association aims to foster camaraderie amongst the attorneys practicing in the general area of civil law and educate  members on current and relevant topics for the civil trial attorney. The Committee has hosted luncheons such as local judges giving their insights on motion practice and  trial tips, the General Counsel for the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit and a Florida Bar representative discussing the disciplinary system and various after hours get-togethers. These events foster the ability for fellow civil trial attorneys and court personnel to get to know outside of the courtroom which, in turn, enhances the ability to exchange information, ideas and expertise between Committee members. 

 

Corporate & Securities Law

The goal of the Corporate & Securities Law Committee is to gather members from within the South Palm Beach County Bar Association including private, public and in-house practicing counsel who have an interest in networking and discussing issues involved with or otherwise affecting a corporate/securities transactional and/or securities litigation practice.

 

Diversity & Inclusion Committee

The Diversity & Inclusion Committee is committed to advancing diversity and encouraging the inclusion of different perspectives, ideas, and experiences within the legal profession. Our mission is to foster an environment where individuals of diverse race, color, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, nationality, age, disability, and marital and parental status may thrive professionally and contribute to the goals of the South Palm Beach County Bar Association.

 

Family Law Committee

The Family Law Committee is one of the longest standing and active committees of the South Palm Beach County Bar Association. We strive to keep our members and all family law practitioners in South Palm Beach County closely engaged with the Judges assigned to the Family Law divisions in Delray and informed through our monthly luncheon events. Throughout the year, we invite leaders from other disciplines that affect our practices to lecture and interact with the Family Law Bar. We are grateful for the support of our Chief Judge, Peter Blanc and the Judges and General Magistrates assigned to South County, Charles Burton, James Martz, Diane Kirigin and Maxine Williams.

 

Labor & Employment Law

The Labor & Employment Law Committee is comprised of attorneys who practice primarily in the areas of labor and employment law.  The Committee also welcomes members who practice in the areas of immigration and employee benefits. The Committee is co-chaired by Melissa S. Zinkil, Shareholder at Akerman, LLP and Jurate Schwartz, Associate at Proskauer Rose.

Members of the committee are litigators and non-litigators who represent employers and employees. For the past several years, the committee has offered seminars and networking events two to three times per year. The events focus on relevant labor and employment law topics. Some recent seminar topics include social networking, the hiring process, disability law, the Affordable Care Act, government agency updates, workplace violence and Computer Abuse and Data Recovery Act. The seminars are paired with a breakfast, lunch or happy hour to provide ample networking opportunities for attendees. 

Seminar attendees often include human resource managers, representatives of employee leasing companies, business owners and attorneys. All of the Committee’s seminars are approved for Continuing Legal Education and Human Resource Certification Institute credits.
Committee members have the opportunity to help plan and speak at the seminars, to write articles for The Advocate, an online publication of the SPBCBA, and to network with fellow attorneys, HR professionals and business owners. Mentorship Committee

The SPBCBA Mentorship Committee aims to match members of our local legal community, at different career stages, to facilitate and foster supportive and mutually meaningful professional mentoring relationships serving the individual needs and goals of the participants. The committee seeks to be responsive to the diverse needs of the individual participants, including the exploration of new legal careers, advice on issues related to the practice of law in our local community, and the expansion of professional networks and career opportunities to participants. The committee strives to support and sustain these mentor-mentee relationships over time by providing opportunities that foster their continued growth and development.

Real Estate, Land Use & Community Association Committee

The Real Estate, Land Use & Community Association Law Committee provides a forum for discussion on legal issues in the areas of real property, title, land use and zoning law.  Attorneys involved in this committee practice both transactional real estate law, as well as litigating real estate matters. Tax Planning & Controversy

The purpose of the Tax Planning & Controversy Committee of the South Palm Beach County Bar Association is to promote the objectives of the Association within the field of taxation, with an emphasis on continuing the legal education of the members of the Association in the field of taxation and serving as a resource concerning federal and state tax laws to Association members.

YLS Directors:

The Young lawyers committee of the South Palm Beach County Bar was revitalized in the last couple years by Kenyetta Alexander, Chris Sajdera and Samuel Troy. Over the past few years, our committee has been dedicated to forging strong relationships between young lawyers themselves as well as with veteran lawyers and judges in the community. The Young Lawyers Committee continues to grow at a rapid pace and offers a variety of events and networking opportunities. Currently we offer monthly happy hours which attract numerous lawyers and judges alike. In addition the Young Lawyers Committee conducts breakfasts featuring speakers that range from managing partners at prestigious local law firms, the Palm Beach County Judiciary  as well as local and federal politicians. 

The Young Lawyers Committee strives to offer new lawyers the opportunity to network with one another as well as to meet and learn from some of the legal professionals in the Palm Beach County community. Please continue to visit this website for upcoming events.
